It was reported in June that WestJet had a cybersecurity incident. It’s website and App was had intermittent interruptions. At the time the incident was down-played.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada announced last week that a malicious actor was able to gain access to the airline’s systems. The OPC intends to “actively” engage with the airline to ensure that it is taking appropriate steps to respond to the incident, and protect personal information.
Interestingly, Airlines possess very sensitive personal information. Credit Card numbers, passports in whole or in part, etc. Depending on what the OPC finds, this could have national security implications.
