Apple AI announcements

June 11, 2024 World Wide Developers Conference

Three key announcements. First, Apple Intelligence ('AI' for short - cute but unhelpful) - a smarter Siri that can answer questions about your schedule, emails or searching references like flight times.

Apple also announced its partnership with ChatGPT, creator of OpenAI, which will power Apple Intelligence. Privacy commitments between ChatGPT and Apple are required under Privacy laws - time will tell if those commitments are sufficient.

Lastly, Apple announced that its Apple Intelligence would maintain personal information on the individual phone or device, and not the cloud - thereby ensuring privacy protection.

Personal information stored in the cloud are subject to strict privacy laws. In fact such laws generally prohibit storage of personal information for any length of time beyond that required by the purpose intended. Therefore allowing the AI tool to search a single device, and keep the information on the device, appears to comply with privacy concerns.
