Canadian Government Data Breach

November 21st, 2023

A data breach affecting Canadian government, military, and police employees may have compromised personal and financial information spanning 24 years. The breach is linked to government contractors BGRS and SIRVA Canada, and those who used relocation services from these companies since 1999 are potentially impacted. The breach, claimed by the LockBit ransomware gang, was reported on October 20, with officials now warning of the significant volume of data being assessed. The compromised information could belong to anyone who used relocation services since 1999 and may include financial details provided to the companies. The government is working with the contractors to investigate the incident and address vulnerabilities exploited in the attack. Affected individuals are being offered credit monitoring and passport reissuing services, along with advice to update login credentials, enable multi-factor authentication, and monitor online accounts for unusual activity. The breach highlights the challenges of securing information provided to third-party companies in the interconnected supply chain.
