October 12th, 2023 --- European regulator Thierry Breton has sent a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, urging him to be vigilant in removing disinformation on Meta's platforms during the Israel-Hamas conflict and upcoming elections.
The European Union has observed an increase in illegal content and disinformation on certain platforms, and Meta, which owns platforms like Instagram and Facebook, is obligated under the EU's Digital Services Act to monitor and remove such content, with potential fines of up to 6% of annual revenue for non-compliance. Breton has requested a response from Zuckerberg within 24 hours. A similar letter was sent to Elon Musk regarding his platform, X, due to concerns of misinformation related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Meta has stated its commitment to monitoring and responding to the situation and coordinating with fact-checkers to limit misinformation.
European regulator Thierry Breton expressed concerns about manipulated content and deepfakes on Meta's platforms during the recent election in Slovakia and stressed that misinformation about elections is taken very seriously under the Digital Services Act (DSA). Breton has asked Mark Zuckerberg to provide details on how Meta is addressing deepfakes, as elections are also approaching in several other European countries, including Poland, Romania, Austria, Belgium, and more. Breton emphasized that the DSA aims to protect both free speech and citizens and democracies against arbitrary decisions.
