LifeLabs LP, which provides medical lab testing across Canada. It holds personal information and health data about millions of Canadians tested by its labs. The cyber attack was discovered in 2019. The hackers stole information, demanded ransom which was paid, and the information was returned.


LifeLabs notified the public, set up call centres and used external IT experts to investigate and negotiate with the cyber-attackers. A Class Action was also launched. Complaints were made to various Provincial privacy commissioners (IPC), who investigated. The investigations produced confidential information which LifeLabs considered privileged. This case decision considers whether the facts collected in the investigations can be made known to the public, including the Plaintiffs in the Class Action.
