July 9, 2024 Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada Press Release
Privacy enforcement authorities from around the world (Global Privacy Enforcement Network - GPEN) conducted a "sweep" of websites and mobile apps looking for deceptive practices in relation to personal information.
The results of the sweep found that 97% of websites and apps use "deceptive design practices" that make it difficult to protect personal information - and that these practices were prevalent, and often worse among websites and apps geared toward children.
The Authorities are advising companies to provide privacy friendly default settings, and to make privacy information easy to find. Examples include: using neutral language; make privacy choices clear; reduce the number of clicks required to find privacy information, log-out and delete-account functions.
The Report identified 5 take-aways for businesses.
1. avoid long and complex Privacy Policies;
2. avoid confusing or leading designs for privacy choices;
3. do not nag users with pop-ups, account sign-ups, or switching to the app;
4. make it easy to find privacy policies and to delete an account;
5. do not collect unnecessary personal information.
