GDPR has had an enormous impact. Reports say that in 2021/22 alone, over $2 Billion Euros in fines were levied against the likes of Meta, Amazon, Tiktok - https://www.cookieyes.com/blog/gdpr-fines/
The AI Act is a more recent animal. It began to take effect in February this year; and will be in full force in August 2026 (excepting Art 6).
Some AI is prohibited - cognitive manipulation; social scoring; biometric identification, for example. The law applies to developers, importers, distributors, and manufacturers of AI systems.
