The IAPP's 12th Europe Data Protection Congress took place in Brussels, bringing together nearly 3,000 privacy professionals, regulators, policymakers, academics, and researchers. EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders highlighted the importance of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as the cornerstone of the European legal framework for personal data processing. Reynders also announced that the European Commission plans to organize a global conference in the coming year, inviting jurisdictions worldwide with adequacy capabilities to collaborate. The event featured discussions on various topics, including data transfers, GDPR review, EU data regulations, online advertising, and the procedural harmonization of cross-border enforcement. The European Parliament, data protection authorities, and regulators from various countries were well-represented at the congress. Discussions covered AI governance, the AI Act negotiations, the European cyber strategy, and children's online safety. The next events on the horizon are the Data Protection Intensive: UK in London in February 2024 and the Global Privacy Summit in Washington, D.C. in April.
